Dogs are sometimes called "man's best friend" and they've been by our sides for thousands of years. Over that time, dogs have found their way into many expressions. Here are some that are still used today.

If something is not as good as it used to be, you could say that it has "gone to the dogs." This expression may have come from the fact that dogs are fed food that is not good enough for people to eat. If food becomes too old, it would "go to the dogs".

However, if you want to complain that something has "gone to the dogs," you might be told to "let sleeping dogs lie." This means that you should not talk about or try to change something, because doing so might make the situation worse.

Or you could be told that you're "barking up the wrong tree," which means you have the wrong idea about what is going on, why it is happening, or what to do about it. It might even be that "your bark is worse than your bite," which means you seem more scary or mean than you really are.

If you keep hounding, or bothering, someone about something, you might be told to "call off the dogs," which means that you should stop criticizing or being mean to them. If you don't, you could find yourself "in the doghouse." This means you are in trouble for doing something you shouldn't have.
