Largest Man-Made Surfing Wave Planned for California Desert

Kelly Slater, an 11-time world champion surfer, is planning to build the world's largest surfing wave pool in a California desert.
Announced on February 25, plans include the largest rideable human-made wave in the world with technology from the Kelly Slater Wave Company.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2021 with the opening planned for sometime in 2022. The land had been previously approved for 750 homes and an 18-hole golf course, which would have required more water than the pool.
"We're excited to make another KSWaveCo design and I'm personally excited to create a new wave that … nowhere else in the world has," Slater said. "This can become the blueprint for new developments around waves and surf parks going forward." He said he can't wait to get started.
The 68 million-liter pool will have room for around 25 surfers – about five on the main wave, and 10 each on smaller waves at each end. It will include waves for all levels of ability.
The wave will be part of a 1.6 square-kilometer site in La Quinta, California, at the bottom of Coral Mountain.
The $200 million site will have a 150-room hotel and up to 600 homes costing between $1 million and $5 million. It will also include a private club, restaurants and adventure sport offerings that will be exclusively available to homeowners, hotel guests, and club members and their guests. Restaurants will be open to the public through reservations.
