'Real' Mario Kart Company Must Pay Nintendo $450,000

A Tokyo court has decided that Mari Mobility Development, a company that rented go-karts to tourists in Tokyo, must pay Nintendo about $450,000 for using its characters and video game name without permission.
Mari Mobility Development used to be called MariCar, which is the same as the Japanese nickname for the Mario Kart video games. The company also rented costumes of Mario Kart characters that people could wear while driving go-karts through the streets of Tokyo.
The costumes and go-karts were popular among foreign tourists, but many people in Tokyo didn't like the small vehicles, which drove in groups through the streets.
Nintendo first sued Mari Mobility in February 2017. The company's go-karts were also involved in several accidents as the trial continued, and in September 2018, Mari Mobility was told to pay Nintendo about $90,000.
Both Mari Mobility and Nintendo appealed this result, with Nintendo asking for more money. On January 29, the Tokyo court agreed that Mari Mobility should give Nintendo 50 million yen, or about $450,000.
Nintendo does not rent go-karts, but a Mario Kart attraction is expected to be part of the Super Nintendo World area at Universal Studios Japan, which will open in Osaka in summer 2020.
More than 140 million Mario Kart games have been sold since the first Mario Kart was released in 1992. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the top selling game on the Nintendo Switch, the company's most recent game system, with almost 23 million games sold.
Mari Mobility opened in 2015. Nintendo began as a card company in Kyoto in 1889.

닌텐도는 2017년 2월 마리 모빌리티를 처음 고소했다. 이 회사의 go-karts도 재판이 계속되면서 여러 번의 사고에 휘말렸고, 2018년 9월 마리 모빌리티는 닌텐도에게 약 9만 달러를 지불하라는 지시를 받았다.
