Expensive Car Owners Less Likely to Stop for Pedestrians

Research has shown that people who drive expensive cars are less likely to stop for pedestrians crossing the street.

One study, published in the Journal of Transport & Health in March, 2020, looked at how likely cars were to stop for pedestrians who wanted to use two crosswalks in Las Vegas, Nevada. The study found that out of 461 cars, only 28% stopped to let the pedestrians cross. However, people were 3% less likely to stop for every $1,000 increase in the price of the car they were driving.

One possible explanation for this, according to the researchers, may be that drivers of higher value cars feel "a sense of superiority" over other road users.

The same study found that all drivers were more likely to stop for women than men, and more likely to stop for white people than non-white people.

Other research, carried out in Finland, asked 1,892 car owners about the type of car they have, as well as a number of questions to analyze their personalities. Researchers found that there were two types of people that were more likely to own expensive, "high-status" cars like Audis, BMWs, or Mercedes.

One group were men who were self-centered, argumentative, stubborn, and didn't care about others. The other group were men and women who were reliable, ambitious, respectable, and well-organized.

Researcher Jan-Erik Lönnqvist, from the University of Helsinki, says that the men in the first group want high-status cars because they think they are better than other people, and want a way to show it.

Lönnqvist thinks that the men and women in the second group want expensive cars because they like things that are well-made, and that by driving a reliable car they can show that they are reliable as well.

Previous research has also shown that people who own expensive cars are more likely to break traffic rules.
