While Afghanistan's capital may seem like a strange destination for snowboarders, a group of young Afghans is looking to put the city on the winter sports map and change the way people think about their nation.

Kabul sits in a valley in the Hindu Kush mountains, where Ahmad Romal Hayat, 22, who founded the Afghanistan Snowboarding Federation, and others have gone in search of fun.

As a teenager, he started out on a skateboard. Later, he bought a snowboard in neighboring Iran and taught himself how to ride it. Hayat said he's the first person to bring a snowboard into Afghanistan, and the first to try it there.

These days, he and other federation members snowboard each weekend on a mountain called Kohe Koregh, which doesn't yet have chairlifts. They're usually joined by around a dozen students as well as many people who are just there to watch.

Zahra Hakimi, 16, decided to try snowboarding after watching for a while. "When I see how crazy people are for this sport ... I really believe it has a bright future," she said.

However, some federation members are not so sure.

Fighting between the Taliban on one side and the US and Afghan government on the other has been going on since 2001. The US and Taliban are currently trying to reach a peace agreement, but the future of the country and the Taliban's place in it, remains unclear.

"If the Taliban come back, it'll be impossible to keep snowboarding, because the Taliban are not sports-friendly people," said snowboard instructor Karim Faizi.

Still, Faizi said he hopes to one day compete for Afghanistan in the Winter Olympics.
