Tokyo Marathon Closed to Most Runners Due to Virus Fears

On February 17, Tokyo Marathon organizers drastically reduced the number of participants for this year's race out of fear of the spread of the coronavirus coming from China.

The general public is being barred from the race on March 1. It will now be limited to a few hundred elite participants, organizers said in a brief statement. About 38,000 people were expected to take part in the marathon.

"The Tokyo Marathon 2020 will be held only for the marathon elites and the wheelchair elites," organizers said.

The Tokyo Marathon is the city's annual race, and should not be confused with the Olympic marathon that will take place during the 2020 Tokyo Games. Those races are to be held in the northern city of Sapporo.

The Tokyo marathon is the latest large sports event to be affected by the virus, now named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO). Almost all sports events in China over the next few months have been called off, including next month's world indoor track and field championships and a Formula One race in April.

Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics and the International Olympic Committee have said they will not cancel or postpone the games, and are following advice from the WHO.

The Olympics open on July 24 with about 11,000 athletes participating. About 7.8 million tickets are available for Olympic events, which draw hundreds of thousands of tourists.

The next Olympics – the 2022 Winter Games – will take place in Beijing. The spreading virus has already forced organizers to cancel World Cup ski races this month in Yanqing, China, which would have been test events for the Winter Olympics. A biathlon event in Zhangjiakou has also been called off.

도쿄마라톤은 도시의 연례 경주인 만큼 2020년 도쿄 대회 때 열리는 올림픽 마라톤과 혼동해서는 안 된다. 그 경주들은 삿포로 북쪽 도시에서 열릴 예정이다.

도쿄 마라톤은 바이러스의 영향을 받은 가장 최근의 대규모 스포츠 대회로, 현재 세계보건기구(WHO)에 의해 COVID-19로 명명되었다. 다음 달 세계 실내 육상 선수권 대회와 4월에 열리는 포뮬러 원 레이스를 포함한 중국의 거의 모든 스포츠 경기가 취소되었다.

도쿄올림픽 조직위원회와 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)는 올림픽을 취소하거나 연기하지 않을 것이라며 WHO의 조언을 따르고 있다.

올림픽은 7월 24일 약 11,000명의 선수들이 참가한 가운데 개막된다. 약 780만 장의 티켓이 수십만 명의 관광객을 끌어모으는 올림픽 이벤트 티켓을 구할 수 있다.

다음 올림픽인 2022년 동계 올림픽은 베이징에서 열린다. 확산되는 바이러스로 인해 주최측은 이미 이번 달 중국 옌칭에서 열리는 월드컵 스키 경주를 취소해야 했으며 이는 동계 올림픽의 테스트 이벤트였을 것이다. 장자커우에서 열리는 바이애슬론 종목도 취소됐다.
