For the first time in years, a commercial passenger plane has flown across the Atlantic in less than five hours.

A British Airways flight landed at Heathrow Airport in London after leaving John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York just four hours and 56 minutes earlier.

The average flight time between New York and London is six hours and 13 minutes, and the flight had been expected to take 102 minutes longer.

The trip broke the speed record for a subsonic commercial aircraft flying between the two cities, reports to Flightradar24. The old record belonged to Norwegian Air, after one of its planes flew between the two cities with a flight time of five hours and 13 minutes.

The wind and air currents were perfect for a fast flight, explained Ian Petchenik, Flightradar24's director of communications.

British Airways beat a Virgin Atlantic flight, which arrived in London at nearly the same time but just one minute slower.

British Airways confirmed the flight time for the Boeing 747 plane, but added that safety is more important to the company than speed.

The supersonic Concorde used to fly across the Atlantic in just over 3 hours, but flights using this aircraft were stopped in 2003.

바람과 기류가 빠른 비행에 완벽했다, 락 플라이트트레이더24의 커뮤니케이션 책임자인 이안 페추닉(Ian Petchenik)이 설명했다.

영국항공이 거의 비슷한 시간이지만 1분 늦게 런던에 도착한 버진 애틀랜틱 비행기를 이겼다.

영국항공은 보잉 747 비행기의 비행시간을 확정했지만, 그 회사에 속도보다 안전이 더 중요하다고 덧붙였다.

초음속 콩코드는 대서양을 3시간 만에 비행하곤 했지만, 이 비행기를 사용하는 항공은 2003년에 중단되었다.
