152 Million Mangrove Trees Planted in Senegal over 10 Years

Since 2009, Haïdar el Ali has been working to bring back a mangrove forest in the Casamance Delta in Senegal. The 67-year-old man and his team have planted 152 million mangrove trees by hand.
El Ali is a well-known environmentalist and former president of Oceanium, a nongovernmental organization that has been working on the mangrove project. El Ali was also Senegal's minister of environment and minister of fisheries between 2012 and 2014.
The forest he and Oceanium are replanting was lost in the 1980s and 1990s thanks to the building of new roads, among other human activities, El Ali told the BBC.
Mangrove trees live on the coast in salt water, and they are able to absorb salt from the water. So when the trees were cut down, more salt stayed in the water, making it harder to grow rice nearby. That's when people understood what had been lost.
But planting mangrove trees doesn't just help rice farmers – it has helped local sea life return as well. Mangrove forests also absorb greenhouse gases, slowing down climate change.
Standing in the water among his growing mangroves, El Ali said he wants to leave a beautiful world for his children. "I get a lot of satisfaction from all this," he told the BBC, "and I'm ready to do it every day, every night, all my life."

엘 알리는 BBC와의 인터뷰에서 "그와 오세아늄이 심고 있는 숲은 1980년대와 1990년대에 새로운 도로 건설로 인해 유실됐다"고 말했다.
맹그로브 나무들은 바닷가에서 소금물에 살며, 그들은 물에서 소금을 흡수할 수 있다. 그래서 나무를 베었을 때, 더 많은 소금이 물 속에 남아 근처에서 쌀을 재배하는 것이 더 어려워졌다. 그때 사람들은 잃어버린 것을 이해했다.
하지만 맹그로브 나무를 심는 것은 단지 쌀 농부들에게 도움이 되지 않는다. – 그것은 또한 지역 해양 생물들이 다시 돌아오도록 도왔다. 맹그로브 숲도 온실가스를 흡수해 기후변화를 늦춘다.
