Amsterdam to Ban Tourist Rentals in 3 Neighborhoods

Amsterdam is planning to ban residents from renting their homes to tourists in three historical neighborhoods in the city.
The ban, which starts July 1, is the newest way that the Dutch capital is trying to get people to stop renting their homes out through companies like Airbnb.
When the ban begins, people in Amsterdam will need to get a permit to allow them to rent out their homes in the rest of the city as well. The local government will not give permits for the three neighborhoods affected by the rental ban.
Airbnb told The Associated Press that 95% of its places to stay in Amsterdam are outside the areas affected by the ban.
Airbnb says that it wants to work with the city on solutions that will work in the long-term, instead of what it called "short-term fixes” that it says are hard for local people and businesses to understand and which may be bad for them in these difficult times.
In recent years, Amsterdam has become stricter when it comes to people renting out their homes to tourists. For example, people can only rent their homes for 30 nights of the year or less, and to no more than four people.
According to DW News, Amsterdam was visited by 19 million tourists in 2018. However, the city's usually busy streets are now quiet because of the coronavirus pandemic.
